Get Admitted to your Dream University – National University of Ireland, Galway

National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI), is a public research university located in the city of Galway, Ireland. The university is a center for higher learning and research, and was rated among the world’s top 1% of universities in the 2018 QS World University Rankings. The institution was established in 1845 as “Queen’s College, Galway,” however until 1997 it went by the name “University College, Galway.” The University of Galway is a part of the Coimbra Group, a group of 40 reputable universities in Europe. It joined the Queen’s University of Ireland in 1850, and from that point on, the university’s name was used while awarding degrees.

The university campus is situated close to the city’s core and runs alongside the River Corrib. The Quadrangle, which houses the Aula Maxima (Great Hall) and is the oldest portion of the institution, was built from local limestone and was designed by John Benjamin Keane in the Tudor Gothic architectural style as a duplicate of Christ Church, one of the colleges of the institution of Oxford. The 1970s saw the construction of a number of new structures on the university campus, several of which were designed by Scott Tallon Walker. Significant growth occurred during the 1990s as well, including the transformation of a former munitions plant into a student center.

With the passing of the Universities Act 1997, the name of University College Galway was changed to National University of Ireland, Galway and it became a university in its own right, as a constituent university of the National University of Ireland. Up until 2007, the university was divided into seven faculties (Arts, Celtic Studies, Commerce, Law, Medicine, Health Sciences, and Science), which were further subdivided into some 69 departments. In 2007-2008, the university transitioned from the faculties and departments structure to a structure of five colleges divided into various schools.

The following are the current schools and colleges of the university –

  • College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies (7 departments)
  • College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (3 departments)
  • Adult Learning and Professional Development
  • College of Business, Public Policy, and Law (3 departments)
  • College of Science and Engineering (6 departments)

2. Academic Transcripts – marksheets from grade IX to XI are required, alongwith predicted score & first term marks of grade XII are also needed to submit your application.

3. Letter(s) of Recommendation (LOR) – NUI requires one academic LOR, and students can submit one professional LOR also if they have work experience.

4. Statement of Purpose (SOP) – It is a crucial part of the application in which students describe their interest in the chosen field of study, their activities and their future plans, especially in competitive courses where the SOP provides valuable insights into the students’ thought process and motivations. NUI requires its applicants to submit one SOP describing the activities they have participated in, interest in the subject, extraordinary achievements, etc.

5. Academic Resume – It is another requirement as part of the application process. This resume is a summary of your academic and professional qualifications, achievements, contributions, extracurricular activities, projects, and skills that you have acquired during your high school years.

6. Portfolios & Entrance Tests – If a student is applying to a design program or architecture course, they need to submit a portfolio as guided by the university. If a student is applying for medical studies, they need to appear for the Health Professions Admission Test (HPAT). Students will be eligible to compete for undergraduate medicine places provided they achieve at least 220 (subject to change each year) out of 300 in the test and meet the matriculation requirements of the Medical School. HPAT is conducted each year in the month of February. The test score is valid for only one year – students appear for it in the year of their high school (class XII) graduation. It is an aptitude test assessing similar qualities to the UKCAT (UK Clinical Aptitude Test). The HPAT-Ireland test is a 2½ hour multiple choice paper-based test, consisting of three modules: a) Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving b) Interpersonal Understanding (much like the situational judgment test, this assesses your responses to a number of scenarios) c) Non-Verbal Reasoning (alike to abstract reasoning of the UKCAT, you will have to find patterns in shapes)

Other than studying Medicine, there are no other entrance exams at an undergraduate level.
