What is standardized testing?

Standardized testing requires test takers to answer similar questions, under similar conditions and is scored in a “standard” or consistent manner, which makes it possible to compare the relative performance of individual students or groups of students. Standardized testing may include multiple-choice format, true-false questions, short-answer questions, essay questions, or a mix of question types.

Why is standardized testing conducted?

Usually many students from different geographies, education systems and curriculum apply for a limited number of positions in elite universities. It is difficult to compare students coming from such diverse backgrounds. A common test based upon the topics that all the students have studied, provides an additional data point and an objective comparison.

What are some of the common standardized tests?

Standardized testing is conducted for admissions to both Undergraduate and Graduate programs in many countries. The popular tests for USA are indicated below.

SAT scores are widely accepted by colleges across the world especially USA for admissions to the undergraduate programs. ACT scores are also accepted in almost all the colleges in USA and more than 200 other colleges across the world.

What is SAT?

The Scholastic Assessment Test is an international standardized test conducted by College Board and is widely used by colleges across the world to make admission decisions for undergraduate programs. What is the format of SAT?

SAT is a three (3) hours long test (without optional essay) comprising of following sections. The questions are multiple choice.

  1. Reading
  2. Writing and Language
  3. Mathematics (no calculator)
  4. Mathematics (calculator allowed)

In case you choose to appear for the optional essay, that will require additional fifty (50) minutes.

When is the SAT exam conducted?

You need to register for SAT on The College Board’s Portal with your information. You can choose whether to take the SAT with essay or without essay. The best possible score without the essay section is 1600.

What is the cost of giving the SAT exam?

ACT scores are widely used by colleges across the USA and more than 200 others across the world colleges, to make admission decisions for Undergraduate Program. ACT just like SAT is used to measure a high school student’s readiness for college education and serves as a common data point for colleges to compare candidates. Both SAT and ACT provide an objective indicator of a student’s preparedness for college education.

What is the format of ACT?

ACT is a 2hrs and 55 minutes (without optional essay) long test conducted both in person as well as online mode. However, for residents outside USA, ACT is only administered in online Mode. ACT has the following sections:

  1. Reading
  2. Mathematics
  3. English
  4. Science

In case you choose to appear for the optional essay, that will require additional forty (40) minutes.

When is the ACT exam conducted?

You can send your ACT reports to up to 4 colleges without any additional cost, post which there is an additional cost of $13 for each additional college. There are additional charges related to test center fee, date change fee, late registration etc.

Which exam should I take

Which exam should I take SAT or ACT?

Both SAT and ACT are used by colleges to measure a student’s readiness for college. However, there is a difference in the format of the exams. ACT has a Science section whereas SAT does not have the same. Also, in ACT you are free to use the calculator in all the Maths questions whereas in SAT some Maths questions have restrictions on the usage of Calculators. What is a good score in SAT and ACT?

SAT scores range from 400 to 1600. A good SAT score depends on the college you are considering. For 2019, the average score was close to 1,050. However, you should always aim to achieve as high a score as possible. A score of 1,400 will give you a good chance of admission to variety of schools, provided you are meeting the other requirements for the college. Some of the Ivy Leagues or elite Universities have most students with SAT scores higher than 1500.

Like SAT, different colleges have different ACT score requirements for admissions. ACT scores ranges from 1 – 36. As a rule of thumb, ACT scores of 30+ gives you a good chance of admission to variety of schools provided you are meeting the other requirements for the college. Some of the Ivy Leagues or elite Universities have most students with ACT scores higher than 33.

Are SAT/ACT necessary for college application?
